Dreams, the sub-conscious and hypnotherapy
Our dreamtime is when our subconscious weighs up what has been going on in our lives and puts it all in perspective. Sometimes it just seems to record things, in its own way; sometimes it has a bit of a moan. The only thing is – it does it all symbolically. We think we understand our dreams because we know where the key elements came from. Don’t be fooled, these key elements are only chosen because the subconscious can use them to carry much deeper meanings; meanings that express hidden emotion. These hidden emotions would normally never see the light of day but will govern our lives.
We dream four or five times a night for about a thirty minute period each time. This dream time is part of a ninety minute cycle within our normal sleep pattern, called REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Depending on when we wake up will be whether we remember any dreams but be assured, everybody will normally dream for around two or two and a half hours each night.
Most of the emotions we feel through the day will be expressed at the time but some will not, they ill be internalised – pushed down inside. If we don’t express these emotions, they subconscious will; and this is where dreams come from. To stop us injuring ourselves while acting out dreams in our sleep, our muscles become paralysed during REM sleep. This is why we can’t move or cry out if we wake during a nightmare.
Dreaming is healthy but there are some dreams which suggest something unhealthy within. Recurring dreams point to something troubling the subconscious and could easily be the reason for the subconscious giving us a piece of abnormal behaviour. Nightmares are easily linked to an unresolved anxiety but there is one other category of dream which deserves attention. These are dreams, which may be one-offs and whilst not nightmares, are nonetheless a little disturbing. These tell of something not sitting easy within.
If the sub-conscious does not give us a piece of abnormal behaviour as a result of such dreams, we are, sometimes, still troubled by them.
So, if we are bothered by any of our dreams, what can we do? Well, we can get them interpreted. This is an intellectual process and will not uncover the hidden reason for the dream and do nothing towards releasing that hidden reason. What we need to do is find a way of operating on the same level that the dreams come from. We need to deal with the subconscious.
One very safe and natural way to do this is by using hypnotherapy. Within a few seconds of entering hypnosis we are in an REM state. This is so similar to when we are asleep - but we are not asleep in hypnosis. In this REM state, we are speaking the same, symbolic language as our dreams and we can find the reasons for them, especially the troublesome ones. When we find these reasons and release them, the dreams will cease and any abnormal behaviour, having lost its cause, will evaporate.
This often feels like the lifting of a handicap from our lives. Sometimes we are well aware of the handicap. Sometimes we have coped with it and don’t notice it but certainly will notice it when it goes. All in all, hypnotherapy is a simple but very effective process and can bring answers to questions that may have been tormenting us for quite a while.
Mark has ongoing training several times a year as part of the conditions of his diploma and he will listen to you.
Are you are having or have you had, at any time in your life, dreams which have disturbed you or made you wonder? Instead of living with them or any unusual behaviour their cause gives you, it would probably do you well to talk to Mark and resolve whatever it is that gave you those dreams in the first place.
