Shy
Bladder (Paruresis)
In
America, there are more men registered with support groups for paruresis
than there are with groups for homosexuals. Legislation is being fought
in Congress over discrimination regarding the number of cubicles available
for men in public toilets, bars, restaurants and places of work. Strangely,
practising hypnotherapists from the organisation Mark belongs to,
in the UK, receive telephone calls and emails from sufferers and practitioners
alike from the US. The question is always the same: "How do you do
it?" The answer is always the same: "It's very straightforward, why
isn't anyone doing it in the US?"
The fact is, there is no "cure" for paruresis and this is where the
Americans are at. For once, we in the UK are well ahead of our friends
in the land of the brave and the home of the free; some of them are
not feeling very brave or very free. There is no cure for paruresis
because it is not so much the problem as it is a very disruptive symptom
of the problem. If this symptom could be stopped, the problem would
only produce another one. The solution is not to deal with the problem
itself but to undo the cause of the problem; this is where Mark is
at. If the cause is undone, the problem disappears and therefore can
no longer produce a symptom.
If you have paruresis, you will probably be very frustrated; you may
have tried so many ways to escape its grip and still suffer from its
control over your life. You may read this and wonder how someone can
propose such a simple and complete treatment, which in eight weeks
will turn your life around. The right key will unlock a door which
can resist any amount of pounding or battering with clenched fists.
Mark can offer you the key to that door; he knows how to help you
let go of the cause of the problem giving you paruresis.
